Miss Larson
Modeling
Healthy Choices
The student's are encouraged to bring in pictures of
themselves modeling healthy choices. Healthy choices consists of
exercise, nutrition, and self-management. There is a bulletin
board full of pictures taken outside and inside of class representing
these healthy choices. Also, I have a poster board displayed on
the wall so the children can see Miss Larson modeling healthy choices.
I want to welcome Miss Hauert. She
is a college student from Northern Illinois University and will be
student teaching with me up until Christmas break.
Children have been moving and
learning about the circulatory system.
The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood, and blood
vessels.
Each child is responsible for continuous movement so their heart rate
is between approximately 127 beats per minute - 220 beats per minute.
A child earns five points for maintaining their heart rate in the
correct zone to improve their cardiovascular fitness levels. This
number is determined by their age and is displayed in the gym on a
stoplight.
An Insta Pulse is used during different activities to check their heart
rates.
Cardiovascular fitness levels are
extremely important due to obesity.
"Almost one quarter of all children in the United States are
considered obese, which represents a dramatic increase of over 20% in
the past decade" (Gabbard, 2000)
More specifically, 15% of elementary children are obese (NSBA, 2005)

system and moving to improve their cardiovascular fitness levels.
