What
are we learning in Second Grade?
This page was
created for you to take a peak into a "normal" day in
second grade. I have included common questions parents ask when trying
to work with their child. Feel free to contact me anytime with any
other questions or concerns you have.
Reading
We are working on sounding out our phonetic words
along with practicing our sight words. We will continue working with
several skills including realism/fantasy, context clues, plot, theme,
and making judgments. We also work in centers and our guided reading
groups four days a week.
This allows every student to work on the specific skills they need to
improve on.
Q How can I help my child be a better reader?
A Read, read, read! Expose your children to books
and make sure you read to them. Help them sound out letters to form
words. The more your child practices the better they will be! Encourage
your child that reading is fun and not a punishment.

Handwriting
In second grade we will continue to practice our
printing so we are ready for cursive in third grade. We teach the Zaner
Bloser style of handwriting here at Minooka Elementary.
Q How can I help my child with their handwriting?
A Practice writing each letter
neatly. Have them take their time and remember it is not a race. If you
need practice worksheets please contact me.
Math
We will continue working on our
subtraction facts. We will be practicing multiplication, measuring
using inches and centimeters, reading and creating graphs, and we will
begin working with mixed numbers.
I take grades on Homework, Fact Assessments, and
Written Assessments.
Thank you so much for working with your child each
night on their math homework. This really helps reinforce what we
learned in class that day.
Writing
We will continue writing in our
journals 2-3 times a week. We are going to be practicing using adverbs
and adjectives in our writing. We are almost done with our Writing
Genre Portfolios. We are very proud of all our hard work!
Science
We are working on growing and studying
plants.
Social Studies
We are learning about government.
Firefighter Rick will be taking us on a tour of a
fire engine this month!
