October 2007

Dear Parents and Community Members,

I wanted to inform you of one of the committees that the Board of Education has created, the Comprehensive Planning Committee.  All one needs to do is take a short ride in our community to realize that many changes have occurred.  The changes involve a tremendous number of new housing units that have doubled the number of students that we serve in the last three years.  Our elementary school district (Kindergarten through 8th Grade) serves nearly 4,000 students.  (Three short years ago, in the 2003-04 school year, the total district enrollment in our district was 1,778 students!)

The Comprehensive Planning Committee is a committee composed of parents and community members.  The Board of Education established the committee to address the needs of our students and our taxpayers.  The committee will serve basically three purposes:

1.         Education: Committee members will learn more about schools, curriculum, and school finance in general, and Minooka CCSD 201, specifically.

2.         Feedback: Committee members will provide feedback to the Board of Education and Administration, regarding issues from the community.

3.         Advisory: The committee eventually will serve as an advisory group to the Board of Education.   We would like to see the large committee eventually break into three or four smaller committees that will recommend action to the Board of Education.

At the time of this writing, we have more than forty parents and community members serving on the committee (and more people are welcome to join us).  In an attempt to keep the public informed of the committeeÕs efforts, I will post a copy of meeting dates and any pertinent materials on the website.  The agenda for each meeting can be found within the attached PowerPoint presentation(s).  The latest presentation (9-20-07) outlines the focus of our most recent meeting.  It includes factual data:

1.     Historic enrollment data and scientific enrollment projections,

2.     Financial history and a 5-year Financial Projection,

3.     Curricular direction for the district, and

4.     The current status of our buildings and capacities, and

5.     Three potential options that the district is studying to help solve our classroom space problem over the next five years.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 9th at Walnut Trails Elementary School from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Many thanks to the parents, teachers, and community members that have volunteered to serve on our Comprehensive Planning Committee.  Your help is truly appreciated.

Respectfully,

Al Gegenheimer, Superintendent
