The primary curriculum (K-3) includes the following:

Kindergarten: Kindergarten is a time for students to experience new ways of learning about their world.  They are developing building blocks to be a successful reader working mainly on letters and their sounds.  Language provides them with experiences in many forms of communication.  Manipulatives are used in math to help students gain a better understanding of number concepts.

First Grade: First graders begin working more independently as well as in small groups.  They also are learning strategies to develop organizational skills.  Beginning word attack and comprehension skills are emphasized in reading at this level.  The students work on narrative writing in first grade.  In math they work to master basic addition and subtraction facts. They also begin introducing problem solving strategies.  Science and Social Studies are hands-on and activity oriented.

Second Grade: Second grade students continue working on organizational skills to help them work independently as well as in cooperative groups.  They work on reading skills striving to become independent readers.   Writing skills continue to be developed working with narrative and expository forms of writing.  Mastery of addition and subtraction facts is a second grade goal.  They also continue to work on problem solving skills.   Science and Social Studies are hands-on and activity oriented.

Third Grade: Third graders focus on more responsibility and independence in their daily work.  In reading, students begin to develop higher level thinking skills which are applied to a variety of reading material.  Writing and editing skills expand in development and includes all writing forms, narrative, expository, and persuasive.  Addition and subtraction fact mastery is expected as they apply them to more difficult problems.  Multiplication is introduced and problem solving skills continued.  Science and Social Studies are hands-on and activity oriented.

Fine Arts/Music, Art, Library, PE, Computers

A variety of activities are planned in the Fine Arts for grades K - 3. These activities are developmentallly appropriate for each age level.

Special Classes

Minooka CCSD #201 offers a Gifted/Challenge program. First grade students receive whole class enrichment activities.  Third through eighth grade identified gifted students are given a differentiated curriculum on a pull-out basis.

The Challenge program is for those students, grades 3-5, who do not qualify for the gifted program yet need additional challenges outside the regular classroom.

Title I service is available to all students who qualify in grades 1-5.  The focus is on improving and enhancing the reading skills of students.

Special Education is available at each grade level in the Minooka Schools.  Some classes/students are in a self contained special education classroom. Others are pulled out for additional help and included in the regular classroom for other subjects.
