In third grade here at Minooka Elementary we begin to take the next step. We focus on getting the students to count the music in order to understand the time signature. With this we explore the world of percussion; where the students partake in drum circles, hand drum compositions, and eventually percussion ensemble composition. The students explore their creativity through poetic soundscapes. Here they take a poem and develop the sounds to make it come alive! Third grade is the year we end up completing our solfegge study by adding in Fa and Ti and low Sol. During third grade we also finish up “Mr. Everybody’s Apartment” book three. This allows us to play songs all the way up to high F on the keyboard. Our barred instrument pieces become harder and longer, but at this point we need the challenge. And we can’t forget our study of the musical. It does play a big role in third grade.
