Fourth grade is the year of the recorder. We start in September and finish playing when the school year ends. Yes, of course there is part of the year in which it is more concentrated, but we don’t put our recorders away until June. We review notes, rhythms, symbols, expression. We learn proper playing techniques and fingering. By the time fourth grade is over the average student is exposed to low D to high E on the recorder. We also play recorder consorts and include it in our ensemble work. By fourth grade we can sing and play to our hearts content! We also use this time to focus on rap. The students create their own rap and the beat box rhythm that goes underneath it. In fourth grade we also do composer studies were the students have to make a Powerpoint and share it with each other. Let’s not forget our movement activities though. During this time we work with circle dances and learn some harder dances to keep our steady beat in tune. It’s all part of fourth grade fun.
