Staff Development Tracks – Diverse Learners

  • Topic 1:  Meeting the Needs of Students with Disabilities
    • Description:  Session(s) will address meeting the needs of students with disabilities with the supports of special education or a section 504 plan.  Co-Teaching and supported models of instruction will be discussed.
    • Objective(s):  Participants will be able to identify and implement supports for different levels of students with disabilities.
  • Topic 2: Best Practices for Teaching ELLs and Students with Multicultural Backgrounds
    • Description:  Session(s) will help teachers understanding how children are identified for ELL.  Session(s) will also focus on best practices for teaching ELLs and students with multicultural backgrounds and ensuring cultural equity within our educational system.
    • Objective(s):  Participants will understand how students are identified as requiring ELL services.  Participants will leave with tools to support ELL students in their classrooms to ensure cultural equality for students from all backgrounds.  
  • Topic 3:  Response to Interventions
    • Description:  Session(s) will explain the RtI referral process and will share supports for student who are receiving RtI.  
    • Objective(s):  Participants will be able to identify students requiring Response to Intervention (RtI) support and understand the referral process for children requiring RtI support.  Participants will also (develop/understand) supports for children receiving RtI supports to access all aspects of curriculum.
  • Topic 4:   Understand and Challenging Your Gifted Learners
    • Description:  Session(s) will share methods to determine if your gifted students are being appropriately challenged.  Another focus will be on meeting the needs of “gifted” students who show mastery of content.
    • Objective(s):  Participants will understand methods to identify gifted learners and develop tools to appropriately challenge gifted learners to monitor mastery of content.  
  • Topic 5:   Differentiating to the Next Level
    • Description:  Session(s) will provide an explanation of differentiation and demonstrate how to differentiate a lesson or unit by process, product, and content.  
    • Objective(s):  Participants will leave being able to differentiate a lesson by process, product, and content.  
  • Topic 6: Socio-Economic Impact on Learning
    • Description:  Session(s) will focus on understanding the makeup socio-economic of our population and the impact of socio-economic status can impact student performance and motivation.  
    • Objective(s): Participants will learn appropriate techniques to consider when teaching students from various socio-economic backgrounds.
